PEDIATRIC CHIROPRACTIC
- When can a baby get their first adjustment? In most cases, within a few hours of birth.
- How do you adjust a baby, aren't they too fragile? Working on little ones is very different than treating adults. The adjustment generally consists of lite pressure (amount you use to test the ripeness of a tomato) on the subluxated area of the spine or head, usually with a pinky finger.
- WHY does my baby or child need a chiropractic evaluation? Any type of an assisted birth comes with external forces. Sometimes a collar bone gets stuck, sometimes the baby's head needs to be rotated, sometimes their head needs a pull during delivery. These commonplace interventions can lead to joint restrictions and muscle imbalance in the spine, pelvis, extremities, or cranial bones. If your kid likes to do flips, jump on the trampoline, play sports, or rides (and falls) then it's a good idea to check them.
- How do I know WHEN my baby or child needs to be evaluated by a chiropractor? Subtle signs that the nervous system is not functioning at it's optimal level may include the following: trouble latching, prefers to tilt their head to one side, is having repetitive ear infections, is not hitting their milestones, is colicky, can't quite settle, spits up often. If you suspect failure to thrive, please consult your pediatrician first.
PRENATAL/POSTPARTUM CHIROPRACTIC
- When should I get chiropractic care if I am expecting? You can start getting adjusted even before pregnancy, especially if you are trying to conceive.
- Will my body be able to handle an adjustment during pregnancy? Working on expecting mothers is slightly different than on other populations. Adjustments don't require much force due to the shift in hormones. Drop adjustments are used for the pelvic area, with special pregnancy pillows and other supports. A big focus is on pelvic and abdominal area ligaments and muscles, also with a gentle contact.
- WHY do I need a chiropractic evaluation? Hormonal shifts lead to structural shifts, and the growing baby changes the loading points throughout your spine. Previous C-section deliveries may have resulted in scar tissue formation, which affects the elasticity of supporting fascia.
- How do I know WHEN I need to be evaluated by a chiropractor? If you are in pain or feeling imbalanced pulling in the front of your pelvis or abdomen, pain with rolling side to side in bed, carpal tunnel symptoms, heartburn, sub-optimal baby positioning (as determined by your OBGYN/Midwife).
ADULT CHIROPRACTIC CARE
- When should I get chiropractic care? Any age, any time.
- Is chiropractic care safe even if I had surgery or have Osteoporosis? I always review your history, previous imaging, and conduct a detailed exam, prior to any treatment. We can avoid some spinal areas, and use appropriate, gentle, minimal force techniques to still deliver specific and effective adjustments to the spine and other joints.
- WHY do I need a chiropractic evaluation? Our body is a walking spring, designed to absorb forces as we move throughout the day. The trouble comes when we don't vary our movements. Sitting in one position, in front of a computer screen, or repetitive lifting and bending alters our proper body mechanics. Old injuries, and even concussions affect our proprioceptive mechanisms, leading to imbalance in muscle tone and ligament integrity.
- How do I know WHEN I need to be evaluated by a chiropractor? If you are experiencing pain that does not resolve with walking or stretching for 2-3 days, then a joint restriction is involved. If you have a physically demanding, or sedentary lifestyle. If you have been involved in a car accident, or had multiple sports injuries or concussions Vertigo, heartburn, TMJ dysfunction, headaches, tingling in arms or legs, are amongst others. I will evaluate if chiropractic care will be beneficial to you, or if we need to refer you to another specialist.
